Initial Gadget design - Phase 1

Gadget Design Idea

1) Set of Dice- 6 sided cube to roll with different numbers ranging from 1-6 on each face.
2) Speaker- an object to place phone in to amplify sound
3) Buckle- 2 clips that connect together to make something

Evaluation process-
We have chosen to create the speaker as it has the most function. Each of us could see us using a speaker in our everyday lives and would benefit from this gadget. The Buckle will be very difficult to design as it is a very intricate object with lots of small parts. Also, having a buckle on its own would not be very useful. The dice would not be very useful in every day life and outside of being an interesting project, we do not see ourselves needing dice.

This speaker will act more as an amplifier as it will not contain any mechanical parts. It will rely on acoustics to amplify the sound. The base will be hollow, allowing sound to flow freely. There is a stand built into the base to hold the phone and also a hole to connect a charging cord if needed. Two cup like structures to amplify the sound coming from the phone lie at the end of the base.

Week 1

The strength of the chains is very impressive, the chain can not be broken even when we use all of our strength to pull it. The chains are quite low quality as they have very few layers in it. You can visibly see the layers and is rigid. The objects are functional but not very complex. The grey cube with a sphere inside is a lot more complex and less rigid as there are far more layers and less space between the individual layers. The ball is perfectly made and very smooth. The white measuring device is very functional as it combines both degrees and length measurements. It is very complex as the slopes used to measure the angles are perfect.

Speed is a limitation as a 3D printer can only move so fast while still meeting the criteria of what it is programmed to print.  The faster the machine makes an object, the lower the resolution. The resolution is also a limitation as the lines can only be so thin as to create a object that will stay together and be functional. Size is also a limitation as the object made can only be as big as the plate. Integrity of the material also imposes limits on the objects made and what they can be used for as plastic can only handle so much stress.
